The Duke I Once Knew

The Duke I Once Knew - Olivia Drake

Life seemed to get in the way of me reading this fast but whenever I had the chance to read this I jumped right in enthusiastically. This book follows Abby and Max who are suddenly reunited after being apart for many years. They had been friends and somewhat more (even thinking about marrying each other when Max is taken to London after his mother's death. They are both not happy to see the other as they are both under the impression that the other didn't really want to be with them.

I really liked both Abby and Max. I liked how Abby in the beginning broke away from her family to go off and work on her own. I really liked getting to learn more about Max's past. I did enjoy the chemistry between the two and enjoyed that they struggled a bit before they couldn't resist each other anymore.

An Anonymous Girl

An Anonymous Girl - Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

I was absolutely thrilled when I saw this book on Netgalley because I loved the authors' first book, The Wife Between Us. Unfortunately I think I came in to reading this book with extremely high expectations.

This book follows Jessica who enters a study about morality. She is hoping to earn some money from this study. As the study continues and it takes up more of her life she realizes she might be in way over her head.

I can't really say that I particularly liked or cared about any of the main characters. Jessica just seemed so weak to get led into what she did and seemed to blindly follow whatever she was told. Dr. Shields was okay in the beginning but really became annoying with her over the top behavior. Thomas was somewhat of a bumbling idiot.

This was pretty slow for me for the first half. The second half did pick up and my interest did grow but it still didn't leave me amazed at all at the end. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.

First Earl I See Tonight

First Earl I See Tonight - Anna Bennett

It may seem odd to read a romance novel when you are a bit frustrated with love but this was just the book that I needed. This follows Gray and Fiona, both of whom have secrets they want to protect. Once Fiona is blackmailed by someone vowing to release a secret about her sister that could destroy her whole family she writes to Gray proposing that they marry. Using her dowry money to pay the blackmailer off is the only solution she can think of and Gray is the perfect man to propose to in her eyes. She figures they both can benefit from the marriage.

I really loved both Gray and Fiona. I feel like it's been a while since I really loved the main characters in a romance novel and really cared about their journeys. The chemistry between them was great and I loved that they grew from a weird friendship to an actual relationship. I was a bit annoyed when it was revealed who the blackmailer was as I knew it would tear them apart but I enjoyed where they ended up at the end.

I Know You Know

I Know You Know - Gilly MacMillan

I was completely engrossed in this book from the moment I started it. This book follows a few different characters who all are connected in some way to the murders of two young boys. One of the characters is Cody Swift who was best friends with those two boys. He has started a podcast twenty years later to uncover the truth. Even though someone had been convicted of the crime he is digging up the past to see if the correct person was convicted.

I cannot say that I really liked any of the characters. To me the all seemed to have ulterior motives. I still did enjoy reading about them though. I got so sucked into their lives and what had happened to the murdered boys, Scott and Charlie, that I was dying to know the truth. I thought I knew what was going to be revealed in the end but was wrong. Ultimately I was a bit disappointed with who was behind the murders of Scott and Charlie but I did enjoy the twist at the end.

I won this book from a Librarything Early Reviewer's giveaway. That does not affect my review in any way.

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo - Kerrigan Byrne

When life doesn't seem to be going my way I can always cheer myself up with a good romance novel (especially if it has pirates). This book came along at the perfect time for me.

This book follows Lorelai and Ash (Ash is called a few names throughout the book but I am choosing to call him Ash because just like Lorelai I don't like calling him the Rook). Lorelei finds Ash when he is close to death and unable to remember anything from his past. She nurses him back to health. After a long time of not seeing each other they are reunited but Ash doesn't seem to be the man that Lorelai once knew.

While I did like both of the main characters I have to say that I liked them better when they reunited then when they first met. Young Lorelai actually annoyed me a bit. They definitely were more interesting after they had grown and their chemistry became amazing.

While I liked the action towards the end I was hoping that the character that turned out the villain at the end would have had a different storyline. But at least I enjoyed how the other characters ended up. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.

Foundryside

Foundryside - Robert Jackson Bennett

I wasn't sure when I requested this on Netgalley that I would like this as it didn't seem like what I normally read but in the end I really enjoyed it. This mostly follows Sancia who makes money for stealing things. She ends up being hired to steal something that is very valuable that will lead her into danger.

I really enjoyed reading about Sancia and all the other characters in the book. I even liked the characters that were the villains. villains. Sancia is gifted in a way most people are not and it was interesting when it was realized why she is the way she is.

I liked reading about the background about all of the different merchant houses and how scriving came to be. I am definitely interested in continuing this series as it looks like it's going to be really good.

The Wife Between Us

The Wife Between Us - Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

There was so many twists towards the end of this book that my book club at work decided to fly right through to the end. If you like a book filled with revenge and twists then this is the book for you. Even though I managed to guess one of the main twists early on I still really enjoyed this. Towards the end of the book I just could not put this down. I really enjoyed this and am really happy this was the first pick of my book club.

Reading progress update: I've read 170 out of 352 pages.

The Wife Between Us - Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

Well we have gotten to the big twist in the book and the prediction that I made to my book club at work was correct. I feel bad that I kind of ruined this in a way so I told them in the future I'll keep my predictions to myself. I can just see these twists coming from a mile away. I am still really enjoying this even I figured out the twist. Now I hope we get to read more about what happened in the past.

Sleepless in Scotland

Sleepless in Scotland - May McGoldrick

I read the previous book in this series so when the publisher invited me to read this one I jumped at the chance. This book follows Phoebe and Ian. Ian is still dealing with the murder of his sister Sarah and Phoebe, who was Sarah's best friend, is on a mission to expose corruption in her news articles. When Phoebe finds her self in danger Ian must save her from the same fate as his sister.

I really liked both Phoebe and Ian. They had good chemistry and were interesting characters to follow. I liked how their romance weaved with the murder storyline but at times felt like the book just dragged on. I did not guess who the murderer was and liked the confrontation at the end.

The Wife Between Us - Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

So far this has been really good. I am really interested in why Vanessa and Richard's marriage ended and what happened to Nellie back in college. I am dying to read more but this book club is teaching me patience.

Reading progress update: I've read 1 out of 352 pages.

The Wife Between Us - Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

This is the first pick of my book club at work. The woman at the desk next to me and I decided to start a book club at our work and she got to pick the first book. From the vague book description this sounds like it will be interesting. We decided on reading three chapters a day which I know I will struggle with. I will definitely have a hard time with wanting to read ahead further than three chapters but I wanted to make sure everyone was comfortable with the pace.

Sweet Home Highland Christmas

Sweet Home Highland Christmas - May McGoldrick

What a great read! This had everything that I needed right now. The main characters, Gregory and Freya, were great characters that I really loved reading about. I couldn't get enough of the chemistry between them. Freya's niece Ella was an absolute hoot and kept me laughing throughout the book. I enjoyed the fact that this was on the shorter side so that it didn't drag on at all.

The Prisoner in the Castle

The Prisoner in the Castle - Susan Elia MacNeal

I am a big fan of this series so I always jump at the chance to read the latest in the series. I was especially eager to read this one after the twist and the end of the last book. I couldn't wait to see where Maggie was going to end up and what she would do.

While I enjoy reading about Maggie I have to say that this latest installment of the series did not hold my attention as much as some of the previous books had. Maggie is essentially a prisoner in this book and is left to figure out why everyone around her is dying. At times it felt to me like it was one big game of Clue. The plot moved a bit too slowly for me and at times I became bored. The action towards the end definitely brought my attention back and I enjoyed where Maggie ended up.

Shadow Dancing

Shadow Dancing - Julie Mulhern

I could read about Ellison and her family every day. This is one of my favorite mystery series and this book was a great addition.

Ellison finds her self in the middle of an investigation into a string of fatal shootings against prostitutes when she accidentally hits a girl while driving. That investigation and the danger that chases her and her daughter, Grace, brings Detective Anarchy Jones back into her life. Can he keep Ellison and Grace safe or will this danger finally catch up to them.

Not only was this book about the investigation but there are also some secrets from her father's past that Ellison learns about. Will her family be torn apart?

I really liked the investigation storyline and the part about Ellison uncovering things about her family. I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout. I was glad to see Anarchy back and to see somewhat of a relationship developing between him and Ellison. I cannot wait to read what is next in this series.

Picked Off

Picked Off - Linda Lovely

This was a good follow up to the first book in the series. Brie is back and this time she is investigating why someone would want to attack the son of her aunt's best friend. Of course her investigation will lead her to be in danger.

I really liked reading about Brie, her Aunt Eva, and her friends. I enjoyed how they all came together to investigate what was going on. What I didn't like about this book was Brie's dilemma in regards to Paint and Andy. She needs to make up her mind whether or not to be in a relationship with one of them. I am starting to find it creepy that Paint and Andy don't mind that the other is flirting and trying to be with Brie. I hope this doesn't last long in this series.

I really enjoyed that there was a lot of action in this book. It seemed like Brie was in danger a lot during this book and I enjoyed all of the suspense.

For Those Who Know the Ending

For Those Who Know the Ending - Malcolm Mackay

I really enjoyed following Nate Colgan in Malcolm Mackay's last book so I requested this book as soon as I saw it. While Nate appears in this book as well I just wasn't as interested in this one.

This book mainly follows Martin and Usman who partner together to rob the Jamieson organization. Martin, who is new to the area, is reluctant to work with Usman but Usman knows that Martin is the gunman that he needs.

I can't say that I was all that interested in Martin or Usman. I found them both annoying in their own ways and found it hard to at times want to read about them. I did enjoy reading about the final "job" that they worked together and was happy with the outcome of that job.
