The Secrets She Keeps

The Secrets She Keeps - Michael Robotham

Michael Robotham is definitely one of my favorite authors. When I saw that he had a new standalone novel coming out I jumped at the chance to read it. I always feel like I read his books too fast and this was no exception.

This book was advertised as being a suspenseful novel but while I definitely enjoyed it I can't see that there was actually much suspense in the book. That wasn't too much of a problem to me because I was still dying to know what happened to the characters.

I liked the pace of the plot before the baby was kidnapped. After the kidnapping it seemed too drag just a bit. I was satisfied with the events at the end.

Fatal Facade

Fatal Facade (An Allison Campbell Mystery) (Volume 4) - Wendy Tyson

It feels like forever since I read the previous book in this series. I didn't have any problem remembering who the characters were in the beginning of this book. The plot seemed like it would be interesting when I first started this but the more that I read this the more I became bored with this. The plot dragged on until I felt like this was going nowhere. The few deaths that were thrown in couldn't even save this for me. Allison's strained relationship with Jason also caused me to not enjoy this. I don't see myself continuing on with this series anymore.

Watching the Detectives

Watching the Detectives - Julie Mulhern

I'm starting to think that this series could never disappoint me. I cannot tell you what you I felt when I saw that there was a new book in this series. Needless to say I enjoyed this one as much as I have the others in the series.

Ellison is such a great character to follow. I love her sense of humor and how strong a woman she has become. She also can't help but find dead bodies which provides endless annoyance for her mother and ends up putting Ellison in danger.

I figured out what the first deceased character had been doing that caused her to be killed a little before it was revealed but I was still wrong about who killed her. Ellison and I were both surprised in the end.

The end with Ellison and Anarchy left me with hope for a future romance between them. But then again I've been hoping for a couple of books now.

Ivy Get Your Gun

Ivy Get Your Gun (An Ivy Meadows Mystery) (Volume 4) - Cindy Brown

I had a hard time getting through this latest installment in the series. For the first half of the book I didn't really care about what was going on. Once the second half of the book rolled around I was definitely more interested in the book. Usually I've been a big fan of Ivy but for this one I wasn't. She seemed especially bad with her P.I. skills in this one and I wasn't a big fan of her relationship with Matt in this book. I am still interested in seeing what happens next in this series.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach: A Novel - Beatriz Williams

I would recommend reading A Certain Age by Beatriz Williams before reading this book. You will understand more about Virginia's past if you read that book. This isn't necessarily a sequel to that book it just follows Virginia after the events of A Certain Age.

Virginia in A Certain Age held somewhat of a mystery about her so getting this expanded view into her life was great. You finally get to see how she met her husband and what led her to move back in with her father and sister.

In not sure that I enjoyed the back and forth between when Virginia first met Simon and the present day. I think I would have liked it more in chronological order. I did enjoy when a chapter ended with a letter from Simon to Virginia.

Towards the middle of the book the plot seemed to drag a bit and I became a little bit bored. I enjoyed when the book picked up towards the end and everything was revealed. I have to say that this was not my favorite one of Beatriz Williams' novels but it was still good.

Penance

Penance - Kanae Minato

After reading Confessions I knew that Kanae Minato was going to become one of my new favorite authors. So of course I jumped at that chance to read this when I saw it on Netgalley. This had that same dark and twisted feel that Confessions had.

This book follows four girls and the affect that a murder of their friend has on their lives. They were the last ones to see Emily alive and they even saw her murderer but we're unable to help police catch him. Emily's mother says something to the girls that will change their lives forever.

I was sucked in to this book from the beginning and never wanted to put it down. I would definitely recommend this book to others and I really hope that the publisher has plans to publish English translations of Kanae Minato's other work.

Here and Gone

Here and Gone: A Novel - Haylen Beck

When I read the book summary I knew that I had to read this book. This book was practically glued to my hands since the moment I started it. This is the story of a woman who while fleeing her husband gets pulled over and arrested by a small town sheriff only to later discover her two children have gone missing. She swears that she hasn't harmed them but that the sheriff and deputy know what has happened to her children.

This book is billed as a thriller and while there are some parts that really keep you on the edge of your seat I was waiting for there to be some big twist to the story. You pretty much know exactly what is going on throughout the book and there was no twist. It was all just building to the end to see what was happening with the children. I enjoyed this book how it was but would have loved a good twist.

Crossroads

Crossroads (Wind Dragons Motorcycle Club) - Chantal Fernando

I think this is going to be the last book of this series that I read (if it's not already the last book of the series). I started off with high hopes for this book but the more that I read the more disappointed in it I became.

This book very much follows the formula of the previous books in the series. There starts off with some big dangerous thing or event that draws the characters together. Once that gets resolved, fairly too quickly, our couple spends some happy time together until something stupid years then apart again. In the beginning of the series this worked for me but now I kinda hoped for something different.

This book is for you if you don't mind instalove. I, however, find it unrealistic and annoying. Both characters experienced instalove but I do have to say that Jo was a little bit less annoying about it than Ranger.

I was hoping for more from this and was disappointed to find just the same old story. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.

No Way Home

No Way Home (A Zoe Chambers Mystery) (Volume 5) - Annette Dashofy

This was a great addition to a series that I have already grown to love. Zoe and Pete are back and this time are left trying to solve a couple murders. Zoe has to go to New Mexico when he friend Rose's son is a suspect in a murder and Pete is trying to figure out who killed county commissioner Dale Springfield. Pete also is left to deal with a sudden rise in overdoses.

I really enjoyed both Zoe and Pete's storylines in this book and how they eventually tied together. Zoe finds herself once again in danger (what else is new) but she receives help this time from a Navajo man who tries to stop a dangerous man from killing her.

I look forward to reading more about Zoe and Pete. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.

Every Wild Heart

Every Wild Heart - Meg Donohue

This book made me feel old. I could not stand reading from the teenage daughter's (Nic) point of view. She went from extremely awkward to extremely annoying after her horse riding accident. She went from being paralyzed by her shyness to committing a crime that she thought was harmless and basically ignoring everything her mother told her. She was also way too trusting and just basically stupid. I couldn't stop rolling my eyes.

Needless to say I found the mother's story much more enjoyable. Gail was a more likeable character that had a bit of growing to do herself. I liked her journey throughout the book and liked reading about her growing relationship with Denny. I would have rather read this book completely from her point of view.

Every Night I Dream of Hell

Every Night I Dream of Hell - Malcolm Mackay

For the past couple of days I have been using this book to escape into a world of crime. While I did really enjoy most of this book there were twists towards the end that were a bit predictable and that really lessened my enjoyment of this book. The main character, Nate, was a very interesting character to follow. I would consider reading more from this author.

Frostblood

Frostblood (The Frostblood Saga) - Elly Blake

From time to time I always enjoy looking for a new YA series to start. I received an email from Netgalley about this book and it interested me so much that I thought it would be the next YA series that I'd try. I really enjoyed this through most of the book but for me the events towards the end of the book really lessened my enjoyment. In fact the ending seemed so wrapped up to me that I don't see how or why this would continue as a series.

Ruby was a really good character to follow and I enjoyed reading about her. I liked that her eventual romance with Arcus did not overwhelm the plot. She was going to get her revenge and nothing was going to stop her.

Ruby was definitely the bright spot of this book but events towards the end just left me a bit bored. Everything just works out too easily and everything is pretty much wrapped up at the end. I will not be continuing on with this series unfortunately.

The Dressmaker's Dowry

The Dressmaker's Dowry: A Novel - Meredith Jaeger

This book follows the same formula of many books that I've enjoyed. We are introduced to a present day woman (Sarah) who has something in her past that still haunts her and she had come across a woman from the past (Hanna) who's story she must figure out. The formula has worked before for me and it definitely worked in this book.

Normally I end up only enjoying one woman's storyline but I really enjoyed reading about both Sarah and Hanna. There were mysteries involving both women and I was dying to figure out what they were. Once I learned about Sarah's past I really understood the decisions she had made about her life. Learning what had happened to Hanna was heartbreaking but I did enjoy where she ended up in the end.

The Sleepwalker

The Sleepwalker: A Novel - Chris Bohjalian

Chris Bohjalian is one of those authors that I can rely on to give me a story that will draw me in and at some point leave me shocked and surprised. This book was no exception. The disappearance of Annalee Ahlberg had me guessing and wondering throughout the book.

Readers follow Annalee's daughter, Lianna, as she and her family struggle with Annalee's disappearance. Annalee had previously been prone to sleepwalking when her husband was away and they fear that her sleepwalking has lead her to danger.

At first I did like Lianna but as she continued to make questionable decisions throughout the less I started to like her. I was very suspicious of her relationship with Gavin and never really approved of it.

The plot seemed to drag a bit in the middle but the surprise at the end made up for that. I spent most of the book trying to figure out what happened and I am happy to say that I didn't figure it out.

A Palette for Murder

A Palette for Murder - Sybil E. Johnson

When I first started this series I wasn't really sure about it but now after reading this latest installment I have really grown to love it. This time Rory stumbles across her neighbor's body and is left investigating the murder when the police suspect that one of her friends did it.

I was really excited when Detective Green told Rory that he and Mel broke up. I was hoping that would finally start something between the two of them but unfortunately Rory had another love interest in this one. I will keep my fingers crossed for them to finally start something in the next book.

I liked that not only did Rory have to investigate Willow's murder but also had to investigate who had hit Kit, the homeless man she had become friends with. At first it doesn't look like the two storylines will connect but they do in a surprising way.

I did end up figuring out who the murderer was way before Rory. I felt like even though I didn't know why that person killed Willow that it was pretty easy to figure out that they had.

The Birdwatcher

The Birdwatcher - William Shaw

This book focuses on William South when he was a child and now as adult investigating a murder. I found his childhood to be a bit more interesting then the events that were happening in his adulthood. There is something that happens during his investigation that ties back to events from his childhood that he has hidden from everyone. I had figured out pretty early on what William did as a child and after that my interest in the book lessened. The present day events did not go as I expected them to and I didn't really like how everything ended.
