The Guest Room

How do you dim the light of promise? How do you wake someone from such a beautiful dream? How do you break a teenage girl's heart?
This is a story about how one night that goes horribly wrong can dramatically affect the lives of everyone involved. What everyone thought was just going to be a normal bachelor party takes a horrible turn when two men are murdered. Nothing will ever be the same after that night.
While this book changes point of view a lot it still manages to mostly focus on Richard, the brother of the groom who allows the party to be held at his house, and Alexandra, one of the girls who acted as the entertainment at the party. Richard's life is turned upside down after the party and Alexandra is left fleeing for her life. Out of the two of them I definitely liked Alexandra more (probably because I pitied her). Quite honestly I couldn't really find a character in this book that I really liked. All of the men from the party were assholes (especially Richard's brother Phillip and his friend Spencer) and I was even annoyed by Richard's wife, Kristen, and daughter, Melissa.
Even though I couldn't stand most of the characters I was still dying to see what would happen to them next. I really liked that while everything is unfolding readers also get to read about how Alexandra ended up at that party. Everything really starts to pick up towards the end and some pretty major stuff happens. While the ending was pretty emotional I absolutely loved it.
This book covers some subjects that are dark and hard to read about but they are definitely things that should be discussed more. Chris Bohjalian had managed to create another book that had me on the edge of my seat and I look forward to reading more from him. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.
